What is Acne/Pimple?

Normal Hair FollicleHi, I am here to guide you to completely get rid of acne problems. Let me explain you the basics of Acne Vulgaris through the above skin diagram. Well, the normal human skin is composed of two layers - the upper epidermis and the inner dermis layer. The dermis consists of sweat glands, pilosebaceous units (includes sebaceous gland and hair follicle). The hair follicles extend from the dermis to the outer surface of the skin through pores. The sebaceous glands (oil secreting glands) which surrounds the hair follicle secretes oily substance called sebum (oil) to the surface of the skin through pores.
The excessive production of sebum blocks the hair Acne Infected Hair Folliclefollicles. Due to the accumulation of sebum and the dead cells surrounding the hair follicle, the bacteria like Propionibacterium acnes starts growing as they obtain sufficient food in the form of sebum. Thus, as a result of the accumulation of sebum, dead cells and bacteria (pus) there is a formation of patch (comedo) which is the first step of formation of Acne Lesion called as Pimple. Acne infection usually occurs in the region with high no. of sebaceous units like Face, Neck, Chest, Back, shoulders and Upper arms.
Studies shows that 80% of world's population is infected by acne during adolescence (age between 13-19 years). The main reason for this is that during teen age sebaceous gland develops and starts secreting sebum (oil). Moreover acne can also be seen during pregnancy, old age and in infant.
Acne can be mild or harsh depending upon the type of infection. Inflammatory acne infection may leads to scarring which in turn leads to depression.
