Acne Bacteria

A bacterium, known as Propionibacterium acne, is referred to as acne causing Bacteria. This bacterium is a normal flora of the human skin and it is a part of the skin’s natural maintenance system.

Propionibacterium acne on its own do not cause acne infection. But when the hair follicle is clogged by oil, this acne causing bacteria multiplies and increases in number. The presence of bacteria in large number in the clogged follicle attracts white blood cells. These white blood cells produce an enzyme that damages the follicular wall. Thus the contents of the follicle enter into the dermis. This process causes an inflammatory response seen as papule, pustule, nodules and cyst.

Propionibacterium acne also produces chemicals that alters the composition of sebum and break down into free fatty acids resulting in damage, irritation and inflammation in the deeper parts of the skin.

Several acne treatments are available to fight against these bacteria and reduce inflammation and skin irritation by decreasing oil production and cleansing the pores.
