Acne Hormones:

Hormones like Androgens (male hormones) and Estrogen (female hormones) plays an important role in the cause of Acne. Acne is generally caused due to two main reasons as follows:

1) Imbalance of Hormones:
Hormones are responsible for the maturation of the sebaceous glands in our skin. At some stages of our life like Puberty, Menstruation, Pregnancy and Menopause the hormones can become unbalanced due to some reasons. This hormone imbalance leads to a negative impact on the oil glands. This hormonal imbalance stimulates the sebaceous glands for the over production of oil. The surplus oil would block the follicles. Due to the accumulation of sebum and the dead cells surrounding the hair follicle the bacteria like Propionibacterium acnes starts growing as they obtain sufficient food in the form of sebum. Thus, as a result of the accumulation of sebum, dead cells and bacteria (pus) there is a formation of patch (comedo) which is the first step of formation of acne lesion called as Pimple. Thus, it is important to keep the hormones in perfect balance.

2) Over production of Hormones:
over production of hormones called Androgens and Testosterone can also stimulates the sebaceous glands on acne prone areas of the body to produce more oil and as a result the bacteria grows, which results in clogging of the pore, and leads to pimples.
Hormonal acne is seen mostly in women due to the natural cycles a woman goes through, such as Menstruation, Pregnancy and Menopause. Thus hormones are one of the reasons why many women suffer from Acne before the onset of Menstruation cycle.
